The Evolution of Archery
By Jimmie Mcdowell

With a history characterized by hunting and combat techniques, archery is the practice of using a piece of equipment called a bow to shoot arrows at a target. Throughout the years, it has become a sport of precision, leading to numerous competitions, as well as a spot in the Olympics. The title given to a person who is an expert in the practice is an archer. For some, archery is like an intense game of darts that involves more equipment, as well as increased physical skill.

Modern vs. Traditional Archery

The start of archery is thought to have emerged about 5,000 years ago. The first use of the bow was probably used for hunting, while its recognition as a tool for war came later. In ancient times, early man threw projectiles at their enemies. It is the bow that replaced this technique.

There are many different types of archery that has evolved from traditional archery. Classical archery was prominent among the Macedonians, Greeks, Persians and Indians, which often took up a large part of their armies. When directed effectively, masses of soldiers could be taken out with precision. Advanced armies took archery to horseback, allowing a swift execution of war plans.

In Medieval European times, archery was used in times of war, but was not as popular as you may think. On the contrary, archers received the lowest pay and were often looked down upon. Since it didn't take much to fashion a bow and arrow, this contributed to the negative perceptions of the archers. It was viewed as a weapon for the lower class.

Asia and the Middle West used archers on horseback in their military force. In the Kingdom of Bhutan, archery is the national sport of the land. One of the differences in Asian arrows is they are less stiff than the arrows from the west. Today, competitive archery is popular, significantly straying from the traditional archery of the past. The use of archery as a form of warfare has been discarded and mostly only hobbyists hunt with a bow and arrow. Modern archery involves competition.

Competitive archery consists of shooting arrows for accuracy points from varying distances, quite popular in Europe and North America. Both indoor and outdoor venues hold archery competitions with different rules. For example, there are varying time limits. Indoor competition allows only 2 minutes to shoot 3 arrows. Archery equipment demands special attention to safety rules and use. You must receive proper instruction on how to hold a bow and shoot an arrow so that you do not hurt yourself or others.

Modern Archery Competitions

The color of the archery board for competition is white, black, blue, red and gold. There are two rings each per color with corresponding point values. The end score of a competition is computed by adding the total of all scores made by their arrows. If an arrow lands on the line between two different point values, the higher sum will be granted. Despite these rules, there are still disputes that call for the assistance of a judge.

There are many different types of bow shapes and sizes. During competition, the only type of bow that can be used in the Olympic games is called a re-curve bow. When you are ready to further your interest in archery, there are plenty of other details to take note of. For example, archers in competition often wear bracers that protect the arm. Tabs protect the drawing hand. Chest-guards protect clothing, as well as the body of the archer. All of these things, coupled with the archer's stance, hand-eye coordination, release form and grip will all contribute to either the success or failure of an archery competition.

What Every Baseball Coach Needs To Know

By Arnoldo Watson

Thus you decided to become a trainer of baseball, perhaps because your child had a team but nobody was been willing to intensify to give particular lessons or perhaps you have just a passion to work in this field. That which it reason is really is not the important factor. Each trainer wants a team of profit and each player wants the same thing but this all to find them below the total effectiveness of the team as a whole, including the trainer. A trainer is a professor and as any good professor should always seek manners to you of improving. These are the things that you want to divide with your team. You cannot even have much, if any experiment to give particular lessons but to familiarize themselves just with the foundations is a great manner of starting.

There are really some advantages to be a coach which is to start just outside. As a long time as you know the foundations of the baseball and the rules of the game, the qualifications of drive are one which can be developed with your team and the good direction will let you know what it is that each one needs. It is your clean model personnel developed with your ethics and morals which will as supplement the white to which the model of the trainer will upwards finish you being. Naturally the extreme foundations of the baseball require that a jug be able to throw a ball exactly and a smooth paste can be connected to this launching and strike the ball in the outfields.

In a real play of baseball will be a responsible person to measure what each smooth paste achieved. Measurement is made by employing the averages which later are employed to measure an effectiveness of the player . once the smooth paste struck the ball, it belongs to the team of opposition then to make sure that within the legal limits of the play of the baseball which they make with their best attempt stop the ball and label the paste smoothes outside before it reaches the dish at the house. The team of opposition can catch a ball of fly, which is one that the smooth paste strikes in the air or perhaps the smooth paste struck what is called a line orders or a grounder. No matter what it arrives the players on another team want to obtain the ball and to label the runner outside before it releases the four bases and returns them to the house.

They are the foundations of the play except the fact that the smooth paste could also do one of the following, the strike outside, which means that it missed the ball when it was launched to him three different times. It could also go, which is a limit of baseball for the jug throwing four attempts with a smooth paste which could not be struck by error of the jug.

In this case the smooth paste would advance with the first bases automatically. Naturally do not forget the homerun either. It is the thing which all the players try to obtain, capacity to strike the ball which is launched to them apart from perimeters of the field of play, consequently having for result a race of house. This means that the smooth paste automatically obtains to advance first base with the dish at the house and not only mark a race but bring it differently no matter who who was on the basis waiting to mark too.

Parents and Coaches in Baseball

By Jimmie Mcdowell

At the on set of any Baseball season, parents have the high expectation that their child is key to the teams' success. This to a degree is true. The success of the team depends on each and every player. Problems arise between the perspectives of the Parents, Players and the Coach.

We each have our own self image which is likely quite different to how the rest of the world sees us. This also applies to our vision of our children. Crushing the ball for Dad in the back yard is great, but it does not always transfer to the diamond. By no means should any parent expect backyard confidence to compare with on field performance. It is a bar that will likely get knocked off the stands each time.

Coach's of all experience levels are the most qualified to position and play the players. Coach has a 'vision' of how all the parts will work in tandem. As a parent, we have to respect that in all levels of play. This person stood up to take the responsibility of being Baseball Coach when no one else did.

Its a responsibility that takes a substantial amount of abuse. I have witnessed parents and grand-parents rip down a coach during a game in an effort to take out the weaker players and restructure the vision. His solution was quite enlightening. Every 5 to 10 minutes, he rotated all the players to different positions, pitchers, catchers as well as on and off the bench. They lost horribly, but from that moment on he was allowed to Coach the rest of the season without bleacher badger. It worked because as the 'key' players were rotated into the 'right' position, they all made errors from simple catching mistakes to 'why did you through to first when the runner was stealing third'. He essentially had the loss (over 30 to 0) a complete community effort. As everyone was responsible for the loss, those who were coaching from the bleachers got a taste they could not spit out.

Will this tactic work for everyone? I truly have no idea, but it's a solution that I will not soon forget.

Parent participation is wonderful. Get involved, get in the game. Here are some things to keep in mind as a parent

1- Don't arrive at the field when practice is supposed to start. If the scheduled time is 5:30, be there by 5:15. It cuts down the stress of rush driving and the hour or so of scheduled practice time is not lost on greetings and jibber jabber.

2- Be helpful, Time lost setting up the field or exercise is just that lost. If it's not written, ask the Coach what the plan is for the day and what you can do to help things along. Players want to do just that, play. Idle time lost while setting up the next skill drill looses the focus gained from the previous one.

3- Never correct, yell, discipline or otherwise diminish the authority of the Coach in front of the Players or Other Parents. If you have concerns or comments, set aside time in your day to speak with the coach in private. It may be your perspective that needs the correction.

4- Respect everyone. Coach's', parents, umpires, players, opposing teams, it does not matter who or what they are in relation to your team. Everyone deserves respect that does not have to be earned. Respecting others will result in others respecting you.

Ponder what it is to play baseball. What do you want your children to take away with them when their playing days are relegated to church league. For myself I hope for, respect for themselves, confidence in their abilities, recognition of their limits, work ethic of practicing and the concept of working together with a team and the lifelong friendships it can bring.

Get Caught Up In World Cup Fever

By Arnoldo Watson

Waiting for the World Cup to start has always been a punishing yet rewarding experience for soccer aficionados. The former is felt days after the last World Cup ends, the latter, days before the next one starts. Soccer fans will declare that the long four-year wait is all worth it once this truly world event begins with that starting kick off. All that pent up excitement has to come out sometime and what better way for it to go than through the explosion of cheers, applause and jubilant gestures of support once the games are underway. Finally, the excruciating wait is over as the eight groups of thirty-two teams from various countries compete for the World Cup Trophy and their respective nation's pride. Last Friday marked the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Several countries virtually went into a standstill as history unfolded in the Allianz Arena at Munich.

This truly is an occasion of global proportions as football devotees root for their country's team with fervent display of loyalty and zeal. In the 64 grueling and exciting matches ahead, soccer fans are sure to get a treat as the likes of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, and Beckham strut their wares on the road to football glory. The powerhouse that is Brazil is clearly the team to beat this year. In the seventeen previous tournaments since the first World Cup in 1930, Brazil has been a dominant force having won five of the seventeen events including the one back in 2002. The defending champions shouldn't take it easy though because hot on their heels are other soccer superpowers and they are not trailing far behind in talent and passion. Italy, England, Germany and Argentina are only few of the countries that will surely make Brazil's journey to the finals very difficult. The other countries in FIFA's top world ranking list includes Spain, Mexico, Netherlands, Czech Republic and the United States. These are all formidable teams that can certainly hold their own in this tournament and could easily be this year's World Cup champions. It is almost an impossibility to predict who will raise the trophy in Berlin on July 9 but that's simply the beauty of it! One thing is for sure, the country that gets to keep the World Cup Trophy for the next four years will have justly earned and deserved it. All this rich history, glorious pride, legendary teams, prominent personalities and beautiful venues will be the making of one of the best tournaments thus far.

Talking about the World Cup would be incomplete without mentioning the hooligans that this event seemingly attracts. Add booze to the mix and you've got an explosive situation warranting a serious once over.

Too often, the World Cup has been analogous to thousands of people trooping into colossal stadiums, euphoric crowd shouting, ultra tight security and some minor riots happening near and around the stadium. Although there is nothing wrong with this image (except for the riot part) and all the fanfare, the real value of this monumental event is not just about winning the most sought after accolade in sports. It is the coming together of different countries and cultures under one common goal. Let's play futbol!
