The Scarcity of Nebraska Football Tickets
By Giuseppe Mathis

Nebraska football tickets have been impossible to find for games in Lincoln for decades. The Cornhuskers are beloved by their home state, and every game they play is a big-time event. The 'Huskers were THE dominant team in college football in the mid-1990's, but a few seasons of "struggle" led to the dismissal of Frank Solich, the successor to the legendary Tom Osborne. Below we'll take a look at how Nebraska is doing in their march back to the top of college football.

New Coach

Bill Callahan took over the program after a mercurial rise and fall with the Oakland Raiders. He led the Raiders to the Super Bowl after the 2002 season, but completely lost the team the following year, a season in which his players openly questioned his competence, and was fired following the 2003 season.

Callahan came to Nebraska with a set of beliefs that were about as foreign to Nebraska football lovers as beliefs can get. Nebraska was always known for their powerful zone running/option offense, and it was a tradition as rich as the school colors. Callahan brought his West Coast Offense with him to Lincoln, and set about rebuilding the program in his mold.

Fans were nervous to say the least, and Nebraska football tickets were never more of a curiosity than during the 2004 season. As was expected by many, the team didn't really have the players to fit Callahan's system yet, and the Cornhuskers struggled to finish 5-6. It was Nebraska's first losing season since 1961, and this result did not sit well with fans.

However, the team improved the following season, and finished 8-4. The Cornhuskers topped off their season of improvement with a dramatic win over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. That led to high expectations for the 2006 season.

Another Progressive Step

The Cornhuskers came into the 2006 season ready to continue their climb, and fans got an early measuring stick when the team faced USC on the road. Nebraska lost, 28-10, but it was a competitive game and showed that Nebraska had indeed been getting better. The 'Huskers rolled through their next few games, but fell in a close game to Texas and then in another nail-biter to Oklahoma State. As of this writing, the game in Stillwater was their last loss.

Overall, the 'Huskers finished 9-3 in the regular season and won the Big 12 North division to earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship game against Oklahoma. If Nebraska wins that game, they'll be back in the BCS with a chance to win 11 games. That equals a fast turnaround for a team that appeared to hit rock bottom only two seasons ago.

Where They Stand Now

If one looks at the Nebraska program with a big-picture perspective, it seems that Nebraska is on the way, but not all the way back to their level of dominance from recent seasons. They're starting to beat the teams they're expected to beat most of the time, but they're still looking for that first big, signature win that will clearly establish the Cornhuskers as "back."

Regardless of their progress, Nebraska football tickets are always going to be hard to find, but in coming years they could represent entrance to a team that's once again among the elite of college football.

The Crackdown on Steroids

By Giuseppe Mathis

Many of the professional sports associations perform random drug tests on their players, and some have instituted policies that direct that these drug tests be done only on an annual basis. The 364-day window that is left wide open allows professional athletes to use steroids without fear of being caught. There is a crackdown on muscle building steroids because there have been numerable deaths associated with them.

The most recent urge for a crackdown on muscle building steroids comes from the death of an athlete in the world of wrestling. While the athlete's death was not from steroids use directly, the depression and rage termed "roid rage," was basically what caused him to kill his wife and young child before he committed suicide. People are now expecting a full crackdown on muscle building steroids in all sports, after the autopsies are completed to prove that the athlete used steroids.

Some think that the crackdown on muscle building steroids should not include steroids that are prescribed by a licensed physician, as is the case with the professional wrestler. Other people view the use of steroids on another level and are considering offering stiffer penalties to those athletes that combine steroids with other prescription drugs.

Many believe that the crackdown on muscle building steroids is necessary because they are widely used in the sports world. The strenuous aspects of the sports leave some sports professionals in jeopardy of losing a lucrative salary because they are not muscular enough to handle the brutality that is dished out on the various fields that they play on. Many owners of sports clubs are now urged to establish strict guidelines to follow and not to allow steroid use under any circumstance.

Some sports organizations such as the National Football League have already taken drastic steps to discourage the use of muscle building steroids. If all tests are correct, it could prove devastating to any sport if entire teams were to test positive for steroid use, and many sports owners are hesitant on taking the chance that this could very well happen at any time during the season.

The suspensions that have occurred are minor infractions in the minds of some sports teams. This view is taken because one sports organization has had only 44 suspensions in their history and these suspensions are sprinkled out over a 15-year period. Other sports teams have only recently suspended their first player for using muscle building steroids and this is because they are sensitive to the crackdown on muscle building steroids that has gotten the attention of many people in Congress.

Some sports bettors are placing bets on how much longer athletes will be able to get away with taking muscle building steroids, and are favoring placing bets on the results of tests that come as a direct result of the crackdown on muscle building steroids that cause death in many of the athletes that take them. Some deaths occur through heart attacks brought on by steroid use and others from suicide that is caused by the mind altering chemicals found in steroids, but all of these questionable deaths are associated with muscle building steroid use in some way, shape or form.

Dusting Off Your Bicycle For Spring

By Cory Lynch

  bike,bicycle,biking,biker,cycling,cyclist,sports,fitness,safety,recreation,

For those of us who put our bikes away for the winter, the time has come to dust them off and get ready to ride. When bringing a bike out of storage, a mini tune-up is necessary. Pay special attention to the following four areas: chain, derailleur components, brakes, and wheels.

~~Chain~~
If you have been using an oil-based lubricant, consider switching to a wax-based product. The only advantage to an oil-based lubricant is that it needs to be applied less frequently, but in every other way, wax-based is superior. For instance, oil collects trail dust and other things abrasive to the chain, whereas wax sheds abrasives. A recommended wax-based lube is White Lightning.

If you've been using oil-based chain lube, whether you want to switch to wax or not, you should remove the chain and clean it with a solvent to degrease it before adding fresh lubricant. Depending on your typical riding conditions, using a solvent to degrease the chain needs to be done once a year at a minimum.

~~Derailleur Components~~
Lubricate the pivot points using a good petroleum-based lube. I use Tri-Flow. Next, lubricate and adjust the derailleur cables, which might have stretched over the winter. Adjust so that shifting is crisp.

~~Brakes~~
Again, lubricate the cables. Use either petroleum- or wax-based lube depending on how dusty the expected typical riding conditions will be. Adjust the cables, which might also have stretched over the winter.

Check the pads: is there plenty of rubber; do the pads hit the rims evenly? If using fluid-actuated disc brakes, check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.

~~Wheels~~
Spin the wheel slowly checking for true. The wheel should not wobble at all. If it wobbles a little bit and you have the tools and skill, you can make minor adjustments using a spoke wrench. But if there is substantial wobbling, take the wheel to a shop and have a professional true the wheel.

Check tire pressure, which is bound to be low after a winter of storage. Inflate to the manufacturers recommendations that are stamped on the tire.

Now give the bike a once-over. Is the seat adjustment still a good fit? Is there excess play or tightness in the bearings of the wheels, crank, pedals, and headset? Also, for full-suspension bikes, check the suspension joints.

From this once-over, you will be able to determine whether it is time for a major tune-up. This could range from a few adjustments to cleaning and/or replacement of some parts. Opinions differ on how often a major tune-up is needed. It depends on how much you ride, and how much maintenance you perform yourself.

Whether you do the major tune-up yourself or take the bike to a reputable bicycle shop, every now and then the following maintenance is necessary for optimal performance and safety: repacking bearings and adjusting wheel axles, headset, crankset and pedals; replacing cables; truing the wheels; making overall adjustments, such as to the derailleur and brakes.

How To Pack And Plan Ahead For A Safe Camping Trip

By Arnoldo Watson

If you are planning to spend some time trekking and camping out in the wilderness, there will be some additional camping gear that you will need to take along with you. If your time away is going to be an extended hike through the great outdoors for several days and you plan on sleeping outdoors, there may be other additional items that you may want to consider adding to your backpack. Instead of rushing out and buying your camping gear at the last minute, plan your camping trip ahead and only purchase the camping gear that you will need. This will give you time to shop around for the best quality at the best price.

The amount of camping gear that you will need to take will depend on several factors
1. The length of time you will be away. If it is a short time such as a few days or over night then you will only need a small amount of food and clothing. Cooking can be kept to a minimum. For longer periods away you will have to take more food and better cooking equipment.
2. The time of year is an important consideration. If it is in the summer months then light clothing is all that is required. If it is in the cooler months then you will require heavier, warmer clothing and better rain wear. Remember to always take good quality rainwear regardless of the weather forecast.
3. Are you camping out in the wilderness or are you staying in hikers cabins. This will determine whether you need to carry a suitable tent.
Always remember to share your camping gear between your hiking partners to balance the load.

The most important piece of camping gear that you will need is your backpack. This needs to be large enough to carry everything that you will need for your time away. Do not buy the cheapest backpack but look for the best one that will sit on your back comfortably. Make sure that it is light enough. Most camping store owners will show you how to adjust the backpack to balance the weight correctly. Another tip is to always use a waterproof pack liner. I have yet to find a pack that will not leak from consistent rain.

Take plenty of Food and Water

Never make the mistake of loading all of your food for your trek straight out of your pantry into your backpack, such as tinned items or food in a jar. The best food to take is dehydrated meals. Although these meals may not look too appetizing, they will sustain you and they can be a fraction of the weight. Also make sure you take plenty of water. This is important because you need to stay hydrated during your walk and when you camp there may not be any good quality drinking water.

Never take away large quantities of basic items such as sugar or salt. If you work out what quantity you need for each meal and then double it you will be surprised how little you need. Make sure that all of your camping gear is in water proof containers or plastic bags.

The most important thing is not to pack any unnecessary or heavy items of camping gear that you probably will not use, especially on a short trek away. For those weekend stays away in the wilderness, if you do find something that you left at home, then it doesn't matter. It is only for a day or two and you can not take everything.

Understanding How Pool Cue Balance Affects Your Game

By Carlton Payne

  cue balance, meucci pool cues

There has been over the years a lot of conversation about the balance of cue sticks, both in the U.S. and overseas, so let us look at all the aspects so you might be an informed buyer when making a purchase.

## How should a cue be balanced? ##
The late Willie Mosconi stated in his books to hold the cue in your right hand 5-6 inches behind the balance point. On his particular cue and with his shorter arms taken into consideration, and the fact that he played 14-1 predominately, he could get by with that statement -- but can you?

The point of balance of most 58 inch custom cues today (which has become the standard) is between 15 1/2 and 20 inches from the bottom of the butt plate. Taking into account that most pros, including the top snooker players in England will say that to properly position your hands you must; extend 10-13 inches from the point that the cue rests on your bridge hand to the point of contact on the cue ball with your left hand (if your right-handed) and your right hand griping the cue, so that you create an 88 to 90 degree angle with your right elbow. Be sure to be in shooting position with the tip extended to the point of impact with the cue ball.

The reason for this is, to diminish the error in your stroke by bringing only one joint into play (your elbow joint) while following through. This also gives you the maximum amount of power at the moment of impact, this means the shoulder joint will not be employed which would double your error.

Further, this will allow you to automatically strike the cue ball at it's intended point of impact, because your stroke is at it's levelest, when your at an 88 to 90 degree angle at your elbow. With this in mind, and taking note that most players with an average height of 5 foot 10 inches, when extending 11 inches of the shaft, they will find that they are gripping the cue with their right hand 5 inches or closer to the bottom of the cue.

It should be clear then, that the further back the balance can be, the better the chance that the average player has of getting closer to the balance point without diminishing cue control.

## Why do you want your grip hand closer to the balance point? ##
The obvious answer is to keep from having so much of the weight of the cue resting on your bridge hand, thereby obtaining a much lighter touch with the bridge hand. It appears that snooker players, those who must shoot the most accurately of all table games, heartily agree with this scenario. They will be quick to tell you, that they like the balance to be fifteen inches from the butt of the cue.

Another very important reason for gripping the back of the cue, is to control the amount of side sway by diminishing the overall angle of change in the cue, by as nearly as possible controlling both ends.

Here is a simple test to understand this concept. Lay your cue on the table, holding the tip and ferrule of your cue stable in one hand and grasp the joint with your other hand moving the joint a quarter of an inch from side to side. You will note that the butt of the cue moves one half of an inch side to side. Obviously, if you were to move the back of the cue a quarter of an inch side to side, you just reduced the error by half.

With the tapers of cues built today, taking grip size and types of joints into account, it is nearly impossible to get a cue balanced as far back as fifteen inches from the butt, without the cue weighing 21 ounces or more. Therefore, at Meucci Originals, we strive for an obtainable sixteen and one half inches from the butt, plus or minus a half inch, depending on the overall weight of the cue.

There has been some uneducated individuals who have made the statement that a proper balance evenly distributes the weight of the cue between both hands. This would mean that the balance would then fall at twenty-six inches from the butt, or three inches below the joint of the cue, putting nine or ten ounces of weight on your bridge hand. This is obviously a ludicrous statement.

In conclusion, a well balanced cue will have a tendency to cause a player to grip the cue further back, thereby allowing less room for side sway, while automatically positioning the elbow at the proper angle for a level follow through.
