CBB: Memphis Tigers Mens Basketball
By Itzel Whitney

The Memphis Tigers mens basketball team has been around for 90 years and they have been a very successful team over the course of the history of the University by many accounts. The team has managed a great winning percentage and has had quite a bit of success within their conference and in tournament play.

The Tigers basketball team has managed to win 1406 games through the history of the school. They meanwhile have lost just 820 games. Add in one tie and the winning percentage of the team sits at a solid .632. That percentage is pretty impressive and the team has had a lot to be excited about over the years.

The team began having a fair amount of success in 1955. This marked the first time in the history of the university that the Tigers had made the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament is the biggest stage in college basketball and is a great accomplishment. The team has gone on to make the NCAA Tournament 21 times in the history of the school. This includes two different seasons that were later vacated by the NCAA. These seasons were vacated because of procedures that took place in the school that were contrary to rules in the NCAA.

The team has also had quite a bit of success in their conference play. The team managed to win the MVC two times in the 1970s. The team later went on to play in the Metro in the 1980s. While playing in the Metro they managed to win 3 more conference titles. The team went on to play in the GMWC and won another conference championship in 1995.

The team really managed to find the most success in Conference USA. The team won the championship in that conference in 1996, but took a while before they were really able to win again. The team then turned around dramatically in 2004. The team won 5 conference championships between 2004 and 2009. This was a result of what we know as the John Calipari era.

John Calipari was quickly a successful coach at Memphis. He managed to win the NIT in 2002 and then went on to become a perennial player in the NCAA Tournament. Calipari was well known for his ability to recruit top prospects to Memphis. This was a huge feat as Memphis did not have nearly the same pull as many other schools out there.

As the year 2007 came around the team managed to pull to the National forefront under the watch of Calipari. Calipari managed to recruit Derrick Rose who became the best player in the Nation. He managed to lead the team to the Final 4 before being drafted first in the NBA Draft.

Calipari continued his magic by recruiting Tyreke Evans to lead the squad. Once again Calipari managed get a top player onto the squad and he helped to bring the team towards the national forefront again.

There have since been accusations and actions taking regarding the ineligibility of Derrick Rose, but it is certain that the program of the Memphis Tigers had been on the upside because of his play and the coaching of Calipari.

NCAA College Basketball: History of the Arizona State Sun Devils

By Brenda Noble

The Arizona State Sun Devils have a mens college basketball team. The team plays within the Division 1 level of mens college basketball. This Division 1 level is widely regarded as the most competitive division of all of the levels of college basketball.

The team has had a very interesting history over the years. They are by no means one of the more successful schools in the nation, but they have definitely had some moments of success over the years of their existence. One of the biggest accomplishments available to more universities is being considered as a team that is worthy of being admitted into the NCAA tournament.

The NCAA tournament features the top 64 teams in the nation. Many teams make the tournament by winning their conference. Other teams manage to gain entry to the tournament by being selected by a committee. The Sun Devils have managed to make the NCAA tournament 13 times in the history of their franchise. The most recent invitation that they have received to play in the tournament came in 2009.

To go along with those 13 NCAA tournament appearances, the team has managed to win their Conference Championship 8 different times. These championships were split between two conferences. Four of the championships came while playing in the WAC. The other 4 championships came while playing in the BOR.

The team has never been a perennial threat to make the top 25. They simply have not had a huge base of talent coming in and out of the university over the years. The team has had its bright spots though. The brightest spot came in the 1980-81 season. The team was led by the likes of Byron Scott, Alton Lister and Fat Lever. Many people wouldnt recognize all of those names, but Byron Scott is a name that most basketball fans remember.

Scott was known for his great scoring ability. Much of his scoring came from a jump shot that is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful strokes of all time. While Scott was leading the way the Sun Devils managed to climb up the national rankings. They managed to land as the #3 team in the nation at one point during that season. This ranking represents the highest ranking that the team has ever achieved to this point.

The team is currently in a mindset of changing the schools attitude towards the sport. While they have not won any championships, they have started to win a lot more games. The team has managed to win at least 20 games 3 different times under the leadership of their current coach Herb Sendek. Sendek even managed to lead the Sun Devils team to a Pac-10 tournament championship game. While the Sun Devils were not able to win the championship game, they did manage to get some momentum leading into the NCAA tournament. This momentum allowed them to win their first round game and advance to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament in 2009.
