The franchise for the Lakers was first started in Detroit before it was moved to Minneapolis. That is when the team received the famous title that they are known for and which the state is nicknamed - Land of the 10,000 Lakes. The infamous team won 5 different league championships before the were than moved to Los Angeles.
The Lakers team was first created back in 1944 when Morris Chalfen and Ben Berger decided that they were going to purchase the Detroit Gems (a part of the National Basketball League) for a total of $15. Because the Gems had the worst record of all the teams in the NBL - the Lakers were able to be the first to pick out the players they needed from the 1947 dispersal draft from the Professional Basketball League of America. From this draft they chose George Mikan who later in life became one of the basketball's greatest center. With the help of coach John Kundla the Lakers team was able to the NBL championship during the '47-'48 season. It was during this time that they were selected
along with three other teams to compete in the Basketball Association of America. From this they won the '48-'49 BAA championship.
George Mikan wasn't the only player that would help to bring greatness to the Lakers. Vern Mikkelsen, Slater Martin, Jim Pollard, and Clyde Lovellette all played big roles and together with George Mikan they all reached the NBA Hall of Fame during the years of 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, and 1954. When the team moved to Los Angeles in 1960 their game only got better. It was than that Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, and Gail Goodrich all made their way into the Hall of Fame also.
Even with this success the Lakers they always seemed to be thwarted by one team - the Boston Celtics. They went up against this team six times and each time they lost the championship. It wasn't until the late 1970's, early 1980's that they would finally take the championship away from the Boston Celtics and become the most dominant team in the NBA.
Fans were sure that the Lakers would finally secure their win against the Celtics in 1972 when Bill Sharman had taken charge of the team. Sharman was one of the best coach (he won Coach of the Year award) and together with his best player - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - the team seemed unstoppable. Yet, the Lakers were still unable to win a championship. That is until Earvin "Magic" Johnson joined the team. In 1979 Johnson (who at the time was only a rookie) had to take over for the injured Abdul-Jabbar and made an amazing 42 points, 7 assists, and 15 rebounds to secure the championship.
Under Coach Pat Riley the Lakers were able to head to the championship finals eight times during the 1980's. They won 5 of those championships out of 8.
Even though they were able to make it once again to the championship finals in 1991 they spent most of the 1990's playing against teams that most did not consider to be legitimate title contenders. Things started to look up for them in 1996 when they signed on the rookie from the Charlotte Hornets - Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

A Guide to Hybrid Clubs from Callaway
By Jimmie Mcdowell
callaway hybrid golf clubs, callaway golf clubs
There are three different product lines in the Callaway hybrid golf clubs lineup. These align with their sets of woods and irons. They are the FT-Hybrids, X-Hybrids, and Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrid lines. The attributes of each will be discussed separately.
FT-Hybrids
These clubs fit into the Fusion Technology line in which different materials are fused together to alter the club head characteristics. In this way weight can be redistributed to achieve certain goals. More weight is placed around the periphery of the club to both lower the center of gravity (CG) and place it farther back in the club head. This makes for more forgiving off-center hits and allows the ball to get into the air easier. One distinguishing feature of the FT-Hybrid line is the opportunity to choose hybrids with a hook bias. This helps golfers who slice the ball most or all of the time to hit straighter shots. This is an option on some of the clubs offered and will be discussed in more detail shortly. Other distinguishing features in Callaway hybrid golf clubs are VFT and S2H2 technologies. VFT stands for Variable Face Technology, and this makes the face thicker in the center and creates more distance. S2H2 takes weight out of the hosel which is redistributed to the club head perimeter. S2H2 means short, straight, hollow, hosel. Five different clubs are available, 1-5H, although the 1H is not produced in a left-handed version. The draw bias option is available in the 2-4H clubs as is a neutral version. The 5H only comes in the draw option and thus there is no neutral version for that club. There are a number of standard graphite shafts to choose from, and of course the clubs can be made with steel shafts. The FT-Hybrid line is the most expensive, and the clubs retail for $179 with steel shafts and $199 with graphite.
X-Hybrids
The X-Hybrid product line is a bit less expensive, retailing for $139 with steel shafts and $159 with graphite. Both the VFT and S2H2 technologies described above are utilized in the X-Hybrids as well. These clubs also have a unique sole design which is meant to cut through tall grass in rough areas easier. The clubs also have perimeter weighting and a low and deep center of gravity. Four clubs are available, 2-5H, but the 5H is not made for lefties. A good selection of standard graphite shafts can be chosen from as well as a standard Callaway brand steel shaft.
Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids
These clubs are the least expensive in the Callaway hybrid golf clubs product line, selling for $99 with steel shafts and $129 with graphite. Some of the core Callaway technologies are in this clubs as well, like S2H2. The clubs use a modified War Bird sole and have an elongated and low-profile face which is said to inspire a confident feel. They also feature a high Moment of Inertia, which helps with off-center hits. There are a lot of clubs offered in this line, 1-7H, so one could eliminate most irons except for 8, 9 and wedges. Left handed versions are only available in 2-5H, however. Once again there are a half dozen standard graphite shafts to choose from, as well as a Callaway designed steel shaft.
It should be noted that all three members of the Callaway hybrid golf club product lines are available in women's versions. Of course there are differences from the men's offerings described above, and these can be easily seen by visiting the company's web site.

Just another Day in Kung Fu Class
By Giuseppe Mathis
Everybody was Kung Fu fighting...except for Chester Rambo Zephaniac. The boy was clumsy, lazy, and not in my class out of free will. "Come take a karate mat," I instructed him for the second time, as the rest of the class waited for him. He lugged his drooping body to the front and slowly....slowly...walked back. The mat fell on the ground and made a slapping noise on the linoleum floor. Normal people would have calmly lowered themselves on the karate mat, and then proceeded to cross their legs, but not Chester Rambo Zephaniac. You could almost hear the ground grunt as he plummeted his body downward like a gravity loving meteor. Never will you see someone sit down so painfully.
"Ok let's just start off with some leg stretches," I extended my right leg, and placed my left foot on my right thigh, the class mirroring me. I stretched my arms out and grabbed my toes. "One..." I started counting.
"Why aren't you doing your stretches?" I heard a dull voice ask. Oh no. Peter Buck was sitting next to Chester. I could handle elbow strikes, palm heel strikes, front kicks, and back kicks all aimed at me, but Chester and Peter within ten feet of each other? I'd rather take a groin kick. I looked at the clock, and realized that getting our karate mats had not taken up an hour, but only five minutes. Fifty-five more to go. "Two..." I counted. Fifty-five minutes and thirty-nine seconds to go, to be exact. "Because karate is stupid, and I only come here because my dad makes me," Chester retorted. "This isn't Karate, it's Kung Fu," Peter stated abruptly but calmly. "Three..." my voice strained. "Then why are we sitting on karate mats?" Chester snapped. Peter Buck said monotonously, "They're only called karate mats. They're actually used for a variety of different things. Karate, Kung Fu, Judo, Tai Kwon Do, Jujitsu-" "And cheerleading!" Chester interrupted. I switched legs and counted another three long seconds, and my shouts echoing in the room seemed quieter than Peter's silence in that time. "Yes, also for cheerleading," Peter sighed, "Because cheerleaders need mats also." "What do you mean also?" Chester said, "We don't even need mats, and we're in Kung Fu." " The mats help us so that we don't slip, have shock absorbers, and have impact resilience but aren't so spongy that our feet fall into them. We need them," Peter stated dryly. I stood up and the class followed me. I looked down at my feet and noticed that they were comfortable on the padded mat but still secure, which I had never noticed before. "You might even say," Peter smiled, "That Mat is my best friend."
Chester laughed and I forgot that I was leading a class, completely dumbfounded that Chester and Peter had a moment of friendliness. I stared, along with the rest of the class. Chester turned his laugh into a cough, and then stated "If everyone hates you so much that you have to start making friends with inanimate objects, that's your own business Foul Feet Pete. Gosh! His feet really do stink. I know these karate mats are precious to you and everything, but can't you make an exception and require Peter to wear shoes?" Chester Rambo Zephaniac said to me. I looked at the clock. Fifty-four minutes to go...

The Effects of Yoga on Mood
By Jimmie Mcdowell
The kids are out of control, your job is a hassle and to top it all off, you have no time for yourself. If anyone told you that you could reach a state of physical and emotional bliss, you'd say they were nuts. But believe it or not, you can beat the blues with yoga!
Yoga is a great mood enhancer that requires no drugs or medications. Like all forms of exercise, yoga releases hormones that help ease feelings of stress that often lead to the blahs, blues, or outright depression. Being active keeps your mind away from negative thoughts, and allows you to gain a greater and clearer perspective on the problems you are facing. People who are depressed, or simply feeling "down", often lack the motivation to exercise. That's why yoga can be such a great option. It takes far less effort to complete yoga routine as it takes to out to a video or drive to the gym.
A word of warning; if you suffer from more than just the occasional bout of the blues, and feel down for more than two weeks at a time, you should seek professional advice. A doctor or therapist may feel that you need a combination of medication or therapy with exercise.
When you're feeling down, it's hard to think positively. People who are depressed often lack the concentration to detach themselves from their thoughts. Yoga is a "moving meditation", so it is easier to take your mind away from negative thoughts. Our essential inner nature can be blocked by negative thoughts. Apathy, despair, doubt, hopelessness and sleeping too much or too little are all signs of depression that must be addressed. Yoga is designed to bring you closer to your inner truth, naturally helping with some of the symptoms of depression. With a focus on balance, yoga can help to restore mental stability.
There is a definite connection between mind, body and spirit that indicates people can beat the blues with yoga. No other form of exercise alone can achieve these same benefits. Certain Asana yoga postures can influence your mood and help to relieve depression, although Asana can cure depression altogether. Asana postures can help increase low energy levels and relieve lethargy. They are also helpful in opening lung capacity to allow more oxygen to reach all parts of your body, and even your mood. Ask your yoga instructor to help you learn the postures that will balance your moods.
It's also possible to beat the blues with yoga because of the calming effects yoga has on the nervous system. Proper breathing techniques are important elements to practicing yoga, as these can help curb your anxiety and quiet your thoughts, allowing you to concentrate on positive rather than negative energies. As you learn more about yoga, you'll come to understand the connection between your mind and your emotions, and you'll find that they can help each other.
If you think you may be suffering with severe depression, seek professional advice. Yoga is a drug-free alternative that can be safely practiced in conjunction with any medication or therapy your doctor orders. Some yoga routines are specifically designed to alleviate depression and taught by instructors who have been extensively trained to understand the most therapeutic positions.
Even performing the most basic yoga routines can help lift your spirits. While not physically demanding like other forms of exercise, yoga will make you feel much better at the end of a session. Try it and you'll find that you can beat the blues with yoga!
