The coach will allow certain players to play certain positions based upon their own personal abilities. Running backs are typically agile and fast, built for speed and distance. They also have a specific position that they must be in when they play which is usually near the quarterback. But the ball is not run in every play, therefore this position assists with catching passes and blocking. Once in a while you will see a trick play in which the running back will pass the ball. Running backs are notorious for being part of the reason games are won. The position of the offensive line may vary, depending on the particular play that's been called. There are a number of possible roles for the offensive position called the tight end. The tight end will be placed next to the line, however it isn't considered to be part of the core offensive line. This position can act as a wide receiver during pass plays, so it can be an used to catch a pass. Then they can also become a part of the offensive line for backfield protection. If the play is a running play, the tight end can help the line with creating holes for the runner.
Special teams are something every football team has. These special teams are used for plays where the ball needs to be kicked.
